Matuson's 17 Workplace Predictions for 2017

Every year, I create workplace predictions based on my work with clients and my uncanny ability to see what most people miss. Here are my 17 workplace predictions for the coming new year.

  1. Record numbers of employees will be actively seeking new employment opportunities.
  2. Mature workers will be back in vogue, as employers desperately try to fill open positions.
  3. Executives will flee their companies, taking their best people with them.
  4. Companies will continue to give out paltry 4 percent raises and then act shocked when their people depart for better offers.
  5. Companies will begin serving midnight snacks to prevent starving workers from leaving the office “early.”
  6. Employees will begin to install doors in their cubicles as a last ditched attempt to create private personal space at work.
  7. Organizations will continue to throw out millions of dollars on training their weakest people instead of a investing this money in transforming pretty good employees into pretty darn good employees.
  8. When it comes to talent, it’s the Wild, Wild West out there. Talent Wranglers will rule.
  9. Employee engagement is dead. Long live Talent Magnetism.
  10. Women will continue to wait until they are 100 percent sure they are deserving of a promotion, while their male counterparts scoop up promotions that should have been theirs.
  11. New Apps encouraging employees to speak their truths will appear, making it more difficult for organizations with lousy management to attract talent.
  12. Weak leaders will continue to surround themselves with weak people while strong leaders seek to hire only the best.
  13. Stealing talent will become a widely acceptable business practice, just like stealing clients is no longer seen as verboten.
  14. Companies will throw away millions of dollars developing strategies that will no longer be relevant in six months time.
  15. 2017 will be the year of Musical Chairs, as employees leap from one organization to another in search of Nirvana.
  16. Many employees will find themselves Suddenly Retired and will be seeking ways to remain relevant. Smart employers will adjust their hiring practices to mine this precious pool of talent.

Unemployment Rate Hits Record Low!

The Bay State’s unemployment rate dropped to 2.9 percent in November, marking the first time it has dipped below 3 percent since the beginning of the century! Similar occurrences are happening around the country. Finding and retaining employees to help sustain and grow your business will be key in the New Year.

Here’s some of the advice that I’m providing to my best clients. You need to be extremely aggressive in your hiring tactics and you must create a force field around your organization to prevent others from plucking out your talent.

Talent Magnetism: Turn Your Team Into a Recruiting Machine-New Offering!

Rules of Attraction: Your Monthly Tip on Attracting and Retaining Top Talent

People want to be managed. Don’t believe me? Look at what’s happening at Zappos, which is no longer considered one of the best places to work. Dissatisfaction with Holacracy (a system adopted four years ago by the CEO of Zappos, where authority and decision-making are distributed throughout a holarchy of self-organizing teams rather than being vested in a management hierarchy) played a role in nearly a third of the company walking out the door in 2015.

Pay attention to your managers. Be sure you’re providing ongoing support to improve their leadership skills, so that you can continually improve the work experience of your employees.
