Matuson’s 15 Workplace Predictions for 2015

    1. More people than ever will find themselves tossed into management roles before they are ready. Most will fail.
    2. Employee auctions will replace online recruiting. The highest bidder with the coolest office will win.
    3. Workplace violence will rise, as frustrated workers take matters into their own hands.
    4. Employees will flock to see Bad Bosses 2, while bad bosses watch reruns of Working Girl.
    5. Employees who’ve been sitting in the departure lounge will charter a direct flight to a more favorable destination.
    6. Wages will rise as employees exchange slave status for working wage status.
    7. Hoards of people will exchange W-2 status for IB Free Status (aka entrepreneurs).
    8. Employees will beg their employers to replace the daily snacks that are making them fat with healthier choices.
    9. Baby Boomers will find themselves in the minority for the first time in their lives and will learn to adapt or become extinct in the workplace.
    10. Sales of slippers will outpace sneaker sales as more employees work from home.
    11. Cell phones will be collected and tossed in a safe on Fridays by the spouses of workaholic employees. Phones will be returned on Monday mornings.
    12. Mediocre employees will continue to rule the workplace while superstars look for new constellations.
    13. Employees will be required to attend more meetings to discuss how the company can eliminate wasted time spent in meetings.
    14. Employees will continue to provide upper management with feedback, and upper management will continue to ignore their employees.
    15. CEOs will continue to be disappointed in their HR teams, while the HR teams continue to operate as if nothing has changed. They will be right, as nothing will have changed.

Mushroom Leadership

My office is located in one of the darkest parts of our home. For years I’ve tried to convince myself that working in a dark room was good for me. After all, I’ve never been tempted to leave my office to soak up the sun, nor have I been distracted by the wildlife that surrounds my home. I guess you could say that I’ve been as content as a mushroom — growing slowly over time while protected by the forest, or in my case, the basement.

I’m coming out of the basement this year, and will be taking the path less traveled. I’m moving my office to the penthouse, also known as the top floor of my house. I’m excited about this journey, as I expect to gain a new perspective on life.
